Capt. Wilson C. Bud Maves Jr. Ret, 73

Capt. Wilson C. "Bud" Maves, Jr., Ret

of Bremerton

Nov. 16, 1937

to July 30, 2011

Veteran

Wilson "Bud" Maves passed away in Columbia Falls, Montana, while on vacation with his family. He was born to W.C. "Bud" Maves, Sr. and Mary Hackett Maves in Yakima, WA, and preceded in death by his father and sister, Patricia Maves Bower. Bud is survived by his mother, brothers, Fred and Russ, and sister, Sandy McRae, as well as several nephews and nieces.

The love of his life, his wife, Lorraine Bayliss Maves, survives him. They met in 1959 on the ferry while both were working for Boeing. Mom was playing pinochle with a group when her red hair caught his eye. They married in 1960 and have been together 52 years. They have two daughters, Kelly Maves & Marol Ann Maves, and four grandchildren, Jamie, Lindsey & Bradley Coombe, and Ryan Maves.

Bud graduated from Bremerton High School in 1955. After serving in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific, he began his law enforcement career as a Kitsap County deputy sheriff and retired from the Bremerton Police Dept. after 28 years of serving his community. As a police officer, he especially enjoyed facilitating police-sponsored events for special needs and school patrol children. He was a graduate of Olympic College, the University of Washington, and Pacific Lutheran University. He taught the Administration of Justice program at Olympic College from 1988 to 1997 and thoroughly enjoyed interacting with his students, inspiring them with his police stories and viewpoints about the community and law enforcement.

Dad was an avid Husky! He had a fierce loyalty for the Dawgs, was a Tyee member, and his license plate read UOWDAWG. Traveling to three consecutive Rose Bowls and sitting in almost the same seats each time was this rabid Dawg fan's dream-come true.

A special memory for dad while serving on Kwajalein Island with the Navy was getting the autograph of Bob Hope, a favorite of his. He was in the PX buying film when Bob Hope and Jayne Mansfield walked in after the USO show dad had just watched. He wanted Bob's autograph, but of course, he didn't turn down Jayne's autograph.
