Wind Cave Superintendent wins national award

Wind Cave National Park - Wind Cave National Park Superintendent Vidal Davila has recently received the Director Superintendent of the Year for the stewardship of natural resources in fiscal 2010 for the Midwest.

The Midwest region consists of 58 park units in 11 states.

This award is presented annually in recognition of outstanding contributions in the management of natural resources by a commissioner of the National Park Service.

Superintendent Davila has helped to promote the transfer of 23 bison at Wind Cave in Mexico to reintroducing an international bio-reserve in the state of Chihuahua.He used various counterparts in Mexico to his previous Big Bend National Park to help organize the exchange.

Superintendent Davila has also advised its staff on how to work with our Mexican counterparts in the planning process.

During the roundup the buffalo, the superintendent was responsible for overseeing operations, determine the number of bison to slaughter the herd, and decide which organizations receive some of bison slaughtered 96.

Management Plan for Elk / Environmental Impact Statement was also completed in 2010.

For three years, Superintendent Davila led the team that worked on this plan. The plan includes the construction of doors to allow natural migration of elk in the park to the public and private lands on the west side of the park. After the plan was completed, he worked with the regional office of the park for funds to implement the plan.

Superintendent Davila supported the monitoring of endangered black-footed ferret and redirected funding to support proactive dust to prevent the spread of the plague carrying fleas in prairie dog towns. A plague would have put the population at risk ferret.

This award was created to recognize and encourage creativity innovative resource management support and direction in the National Park Service.
