CineFest to feature films of Jewish interest

A family seeking shelter from Nazis, Jewish European migration, a woman fighting illness, plus a look at a famous woman’s life will be featured stories in the upcoming Cinefest 2011 at the Jewish Community Center.

For each week in October, a film of Jewish interest will be showing at the Gordon Center for Performing Arts in Owings Mills.

The JCC has two movie events each year, the Baltimore Jewish Film Festival in the spring and Cinefest in the fall.

Festival organizers said many attendants of the 22-year-old film festival were looking for another opportunity to see the movies.

In response, the JCC produced Cinefest, now in its fourth year.

“A lot of people said, why do we have to wait a whole year to see these films?” JCC spokeswoman Nancy Goldberg said.

This year, the four featured movies are tales of love, loss, and hope.

Some of the films in Cinefest may not have been available for the last Baltimore Jewish film festival.

The movies have been released previously in Israel and Poland, but will premiere in the Baltimore area for the first time this fall.

“Spring 1941,” screening Oct. 3, tells the story of Artur Planck (Joseph Fiennes) and his family who are looking for shelter from Nazis in Poland.

But during their stay at the farm of local grocer, Emelia, a love triangle forms between Arthur, Emelia, and his wife, Clara.

In “Gei Oni,” screening Oct. 10, a 17-year-old mother and her family that survived a violent riot, try to rebuild their lives. She marries, but a secret she’s holding onto may jeopardize everything.

A woman who has already lost two infants to an illness is on the verge of losing a third to the same complications in “Precious Life,” showing Oct. 17.

The true story documents a Palestinian woman working with Israeli doctors to try and save her child’s life.

Finally, feminist Ruth Gruber is profiled in the documentary “Ahead of Time,” that details her accomplished life, including being the youngest person to earn a doctorate degree at 20. She was also a New York Herald Tribune reporter, and later a member of the Roosevelt administration, where she was given a secret mission during WWII. “Ahead of Time” screens Oct. 26.
