In want of some good dirt
Miguel Freitas is an ordinary 14-year-old. He likes hanging out with his friends, playing soccer and in the fall he'll be starting high school at John Paul II Catholic Secondary School.
But he has another pastime he feels isn't as well understood by some people. Since he was 11 years old, he's been dirt jump biking with his friends.
"My friend bikes as well. He kind of came by to my house and asked me to go one day and that's how I started," he recalled. "I started with a regular bike and started to get into it more. For my 12th birthday I asked my parents to get me a dirt jump bike and that's when I really go into it."
But after reading a recent story in the Londoner about a cat-and-mouse game that's been going on in Meadowlily Woods between bikers and conservation authority staff, he felt he had to speak up on behalf of himself and others who dirt jump as an outlet.
"There's a story behind these people who built (the jumps)," Freitas told the Londoner. "It was a bunch of BMX bikers and they built it for people to go dirt jump biking. We found the jumps and we thought it was amazing, so we'd hit it every day."
This lasted until a few months ago, when he and his friends received the message from the staff of the Conservation Authority - Meadowlily is not monitored for a trail bike safety and cycling there is a risk of damage the natural environment. Freitas and his friends stopped going to Meadowlily, but were left frustrated.
"Only track Fanshawe, but this has nothing to do with the sport of freestyle dirt jumping," said Freitas. "It must do more with Cross County bike. Dirt jumping involves large piles of dirt patted down to create a large course where we can physically use them to grab some air, which gives the whole meaning to dirt jumping."
Although he and his friends are staying off the Meadowlily trails, near to where he lives, they are irritated that they've lost an activity and Freitas says they're not the only ones.
