Schools promoting healthier food choices, healthier kids
- As schools prepare to welcome the children back this year, the cafeterias are working to prepare healthy lunches.Research shows that providing education about prevention of obesity, combined with healthy food in breakfast and school lunches, not only makes children's health, but also save money.
While the first lady Michelle Obama introduced a bill last year calling on communities to work together to fight against childhood obesity, most school districts say it's something they have worked for years.
In Williamston-based Anderson School District 1, healthy lunches are on the line used for years.
Debbie Joy, director of food services, removed the white bread for whole grain breads, started serving brown rice instead of white rice and has removed all the deep fryer in the neighborhood.
But instead of complaints, what is meant by children is a desire for more.
This year, food-service workers go through training to make healthier food more appealing to children, she said. But the cafeterias of the district will also provide healthier choices.
This year there will be no corn syrup high fructose in the flavored milk, an additive used to sweeten the milk has been shown to increase the risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes.
The district will also roast more vegetables, she said.
When joy came to the district, one of his first acts was to remove French fries and other fried foods. Now, these foods are grilled. And their popularity has inspired to try more than roasting.
"We will roast the vegetables this year. We made some potatoes, but we will add the carrots, zucchini, beets, maybe, "she said."We want to give them different choices ... I think they really love zucchini. "
The grilled vegetables are delicious, she said, and they can engage children to eat more vegetables.
Joy also offers salad bars in every school in the district. It is important, she says, to teach children to choose vegetables at an early age.
