Feds release study of trapping effects on wolves
Albuquerque, NM (AP) - The debate over wildlife management are doing enough to protect the Mexican gray wolves in the Southwest has been revived with the publication of a long-awaited study on the trapping of furbearers Federal.
The U.S. Geological Survey report found that the trapping, by both wildlife managers and others, accounted for less than 4% of fatal accidents since the wolf reintroduction effort animals began in 1998.
Of the 13 incidents documented trapping in New Mexico other than those involving trappers working for the recovery effort of the wolf, two wolves have died from their injuries
There were 78 deaths documented since wolf reintroduction effort began.
Environmentalists have criticized the decision of the Commissioners game state to lift a recent ban on trapping since the study was not released until Monday.
WildEarth Guardians said "The fact that two wolves were killed in traps was enough to make our awe."
